Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that specialises in the relationship between the vertebral column (structure) and the nervous system (function). It focuses on diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, with special emphasis on the spine problems that may affect the overall health of an individual.
Chiropractic was created in 1895 in the United States by D.D. Palmer, and has since gained recognition as a primary health care provider in many countries worldwide. The profession has been incorporated into primary health care in many countries worldwide, and was incorporated into the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2005. It continues to expand every day.
Chiropractic is a manual therapy, including spinal manipulation, other joint and soft-tissue manipulation, exercises, health and lifestyle counselling.
Chiropractors are trained to correct spine and extremities joint motion – including the shoulders and hips– without surgery. Correcting the articular range of motion will increase joint space, thereby preventing chronic muscle and ligament damage and bone degeneration.
About Spine and Health
Your spine is design to protect the nerve system, which is responsible of moving information and control from the brain to every cell, organ and tissue of your body. Your nervous system is responsible for what you feel, how you function and about how well you heal.
Chiropractors help to remove mechanical pressure in the nervous system accumulated from physical and emotional stressors of everyday life. Such a pressure can influence many health conditions and be manifested in different ways.
Chiropractic adjustments are generally quick, high velocity, low amplitude manual thrusts, done with the chiropractor’s hands to correct misaligned vertebrae’s or articulations into their correct position. That help to recover the natural spine, cranium and pelvic articular joint motion.
This is done to improve articular range of motion, nervous system communication, and global body motion and function – without medication or invasive procedures. When the vertebrae are correctly adjusted, the brain and the body can communicate at 100% of their capability.
Chiropractic care consists primarily, of small and precise painless movements Each correction is called “an adjustment”. When a joint loses its natural movement pattern, it can create a negative impact on the rest of the neuro-musculoskeletal body and organs.
Chiropractic adjustments are:
• Specific for each person and situation
• Completely safe and without any risk
What are Subluxations?
A subluxation is a pathological, structural, or functional articular alteration – usually in the cranium, vertebral spinal column, or pelvis – that reduces proper neurological function and communication. Subluxation affects body health and wellness, and can be associated with a variety of health related issues.
Can be the origin of subluxation
- Physical stress (obesity, poor posture, repetitive movements, sports, falls or accidents, etc.)
- Chemical stressors (smoking, alcohol, hormonal imbalances, poor diet, etc.)
- Emotional stress (disagreements with family members, professional goals, love, etc.)
Because only 10% of our nervous system is designed to send pain signals and 90% is designed to transmit information only, being “pain free” does not necessarily indicate optimal neuro-musculoskeletal health. This is why chiropractic specialises in the study of the nervous system and the effects of stress on producing nerve interferences (subluxations).
The correction and prevention of subluxations in the nervous system will improve overall health and prevent surgery and the use of medications.
What is a vertebral subluxation
When the joints of the vertebrae do not move well, they can interfere with the nerves that pass through the spine. Vertebral subluxation creates interference in the nerve impulses/communication, and these interferences can diminish the auto-regulatory capacity of the nervous system on the functions of organs and tissues of the body.
Depending on each patient, the chiropractor will make adjustments in different areas, usually focusing on the spine, pelvis and/or skull.
Sometimes it is necessary to work with other areas, for example the jaw, diaphragm, limbs, etc.
Common manifestations of the nerve system collapse
Conditions such as…
When your nerve system is functioning properly, your body has the ability to heal itself and return to optimal function.
Chiropractic care improves the inner health and adaptive capacity to daily life stressors/challenges.
